Description

The Import, Grid command reads grid data from non-native files into Fidelity Pointwise. After selecting File, Import, Grid, the presented file browser will allow you to choose the file type from a list of supported formats, the directory in which the file resides, and the name of the file to open.

Note that Fidelity Pointwise will try to open the chosen file based on the attributes associated with the file type selected in the file browser. However, if the format of the file does not match the expected attributes of the specified file type or extension, Fidelity Pointwise will open the Import Grid panel for File Type re-selection (see image below). Choose the appropriate file type from the pull-down list or select Cancel to exit the import operation. Depending on the chosen file type, the panel may expand with additional import options.

File, Import Grid Mismatch Panel
The Import Grid panels provide file type re-selection when type mismatch occurs.

If an unstructured wireframe file is selected for import (e.g. CGNS, Nastran, Patran), the Import Grid panel will provide options for splitting incoming domains. An example is shown below:

File, Import Grid Domain Split Panel
Use the Import Grid panel to set import options.

You can automatically split incoming domains by turning angle between cells by entering a target Split Domain Angle in degrees. Edges between cells where there is a turning angle greater than the Split Domain Angle will be marked as a split location for the domain. You can also check on the Split Multiple Edged Domains option to automatically split multiple-edged incoming domains to ensure that all resulting domains are single-edged.

For the grid formats that support it, you can check on the Import Boundary and Volume Condition Data checkbox to import the boundary and volume condition data from a file. For details on which grid formats support boundary and volume conditions, please review the Supported Grid Formats table.
